Sustainable Design Needs Standards to Protect Public

Award Winning Paper Focuses on Ethics and Sustainable Design

Indianapolis, Ind. Jessica Keahey, an engineer at McGoodwin Williams and Yates in Fayetteville, Ark., won the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Region 4 D.V. Terrell Paper Competition.

Each year, Region 4 sponsors a paper competition for younger members (age 35 years and younger) to provoke thoughtful consideration of ethics topics. The competition challenges younger members to become engaged in their profession by communicating their thoughts on questions that currently face civil engineers in their daily roles of helping build a better society.

For the first time, this year’s Terrell competition topic deals with both ethics and sustainable design. Sustainability in engineering relates to achieving development goals while preserving or conserving our natural resources.
